Thin Lips

Thin lips are also referred to as small lips, and their appearance is as the name of the concern suggests; lips that are not as full as a person would like them to be.

WHAT ARE THIN LIPS?

Like with many common concerns, it is down to the individual’s own perception as to whether or not they feel the lips are thin, which can affect one or both of the lips. In many cases it is the top lip that is felt to be lacking in volume, and those affected often feel like it gives them a stern appearance. For older adults who are experiencing thin lips, it is also quite common for lip lines to be present.

WHAT CAUSES THIN LIPS?

Thin lips can often occur naturally when a person inherits this characteristic from their birth parents. However, they can also be a concern that develops as a result of ageing. Collagen is found in the middle layer of the dermis, and from the age of around 20+ the production of this substance starts to decline. As it is collagen that maintains volume in the skin and tissues, fullness to the lips can decrease as levels of collagen diminish. Although a person is often quite young when this process begins, its effects may not become noticeable for several more years.

HOW CAN THIS BE TREATED?

A treatment for thin lips is found to suit a wide demographic. There are younger patients who wish to volumize their lips in order to enhance the look of this feature and create a more defined look to the lips. And, there are more mature patients who wish to replace lost volume and reshape their appearance. In both instances, a lip filler treatment is an effective solution. Specially formulated dermal fillers are injected into the lips at the right depth and location, improving the shape, size and definition of the lips. This can also create more harmony and balance with the facial features, overall.
