WHAT ARE DARK CIRCLES?
Many people can be affected by this concern and for a number of reasons. It is often the case that eyebags, eye wrinkles and puffiness under the lower lid can accompany dark circles, which simply appear as darker looking skin beneath the eyes.
WHAT CAUSES DARK CIRCLES?
Dark circles can be the result of thinning skin that allows blood vessels to become more visible. Thinning skin can develop as part of the ageing process, and especially around the eyes, the skin is already thinner than on other parts of the face. Ageing can also be responsible for weak and sagging skin around the eyes, whereby eyebags will form. Puffiness and loose skin can often lead to shadowing beneath the lower lid giving the appearance of darkened skin. The buildup of fluid in the lower lid from fatigue or allergies can also have the same effect. Another main cause can be sun exposure, when an excess production of melanin in this area discolours the skin and makes it become darker.
In some cases, a person’s natural colouring gives dark circles. This usually occurs in those with a complexion that has a ‘olive’ tone.
HOW ARE THEY TREATED?
Treating dark circles can be approached in a number ways, depending on the possible cause. In some cases, lifestyle changes can improve the concern, such as getting a good night’s sleep, drinking plenty of water and treating the symptoms of allergies.
When a more targeted approach is required Dr. Grace Kelly Aesthetic Skin Clinic has a range of treatments that can help. Dermal fillers can fill any hollows in the tear trough area (between the lower lid and cheek) which reduces any shadowing. Treatments such as Hydrafacial Eye Perk, mesotherapy, chemical peels and advanced medical skin care may be suggested as a solution for improving the condition and quality of the skin. Dr. Grace Kelly stocks the ZO Skin Health and Obagi Medical skin care products, which are available to purchase following a consultation.
