WHAT IS ACNE?
Blackheads, whiteheads and pus-filled spots are characteristic of this condition which is often noticeable to others, causing the affected person to feel self-conscious. It most often affects the skin on the face, but it can also spread to the chest, shoulders and upper back. In some cases of acne the skin can feel hot, sore to the touch and becomes easily irritated.
WHAT CAUSES ACNE?
The main cause of acne is blocked pores. The skin can become congested when excess oil (sebum), everyday dirt and dead skin cells build up on the skin’s surface, getting lodged in the pores. The face, chest, shoulders and back typically have more sebaceous glands than other parts of the body, which is why acne tends to affect these areas.
Androgens are hormones that control sebum production. These hormones can increase during puberty, causing excess oil on the skin’s surface that contributes to the development of acne. Adults can also experience fluctuations in hormone levels at certain times of their life, such as for women during pregnancy or the menopause, causing a breakout of spots. Hormones levels can also change as a result of ageing.
HOW IS IT TREATED?
The team at Dr. Grace Kelly Aesthetic Skin Clinic understands how acne can impact a person’s overall well-being.
Treating this concern effectively means targeting the surface of the skin directly, regulating the amount of sebum that is produced as well as eliminating bacteria and calming inflammation. Stellar M22 IPL for acne delivers intense pulses of light to the superficial layers of the skin to do just this. We can also improve the quality and condition of the skin through the use of chemical peels or a bespoke hydrafacial. These treatments, along with a suitable skin care regime, can help to keep the skin cleansed and exfoliated so you can look forward to clearer, brighter complexion.
