WHAT IS A DOUBLE CHIN?

This concern is typically determined by the exposure of skin beneath the chin and / or around the neck, which gives a heavy look to the lower part of the face.

There can be a couple of different reasons why a double chin appears which will differ from person to person. Depending on its cause, it can develop at any time in a person’s life and can affect both men and women. 

WHAT CAUSES A DOUBLE CHIN?

The cause of a double chin in the first instance is weight gain. Excess fat can distribute itself in a variety of ways depending on the individual. Many people find that gaining weight will change the shape and size of both the face and body, with excess fat in the facial area often sitting beneath the chin when it has nowhere else to go. 

Secondly, the process of ageing will commonly be a factor that leads to this condition. As the skin weakens and its ability to ‘bounce back’ declines, the skin becomes loose around the chin and neck (often referred to as ‘turkey neck’). The face also contains natural deposits of fatty tissue and when sagging skin allows a pocket to develop beneath the chin, it can settle in this pocket and begin to hang. 

HOW CAN IT BE TREATED?

If it is found that excess fat is the main factor we may suggest that getting rid of these deposits will help to reduce the ‘double chin’.
