WHAT ARE JOWLS?

The skin becomes loose and starts to sag which can often cause the face to look heavy around the jaw, as well as giving the affected person a tired or stressed look. A downturned mouth and marionette lines may also be found to accompany this common condition which often develops on both sides of the face.

The time at which jowls will appear can vary from one person to another, however, they may typically emerge when a person reaches their 40’s.

WHAT CAUSES JOWLS?

Jowls are mainly an ageing-related concern. As with many other concerns that appear as a person gets older, it is the quality of the skin that leads to their appearance. Everyone will experience a loss in collagen and elastin from the skin as they progress through adulthood. These substances are often described as the building blocks of the skin’s structure, which provide the complexion with firm, full and supple properties. As collagen and elastin decline, the skin becomes weak and less stretchy, allowing gravity to pull it downwards. 

HOW CAN THEY BE TREATED?

At Dr. Grace Kelly Aesthetic Skin Clinic we find the most effective way to improve the appearance of jowls is to restore the skin’s firm and full properties. Exilis Ultra is a skin tightening procedure that uses radiofrequency technology to help enhance the production of collagen and elastin, which in turn will increase volume and lift the skin. This treatment can be used once or twice a year to maintain long-term results, with medical grade skin care (such as ZO Skin Health or Obagi medical) helping to support a strong and healthy complexion. Alternatively, we can improve the appearance of jowls by combining the use of Profhilo (to restore collagen and elastin) with dermal fillers (supporting the mid-face to lift the skin) to enhance the quality of the skin and redefine the jawline.
