What are Botox injections?

Botox injections are a popular skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing treatment. They help to smooth out fine lines that appear when you laugh, smile or frown. These are also known as expression lines.

Anti-wrinkle injections work by using a small amount of Botulinum toxin that we inject into specific facial muscles. This is a type of purified protein that helps to relax these muscles for a short time, which stops the muscles from contracting and causing lines to show.

The results of Botox treatments are not permanent. Instead, they last for 3-4 months, at which point, the facial muscles will return to their normal function and your lines and wrinkles will start to reappear.

Anti-ageing treatments – Botox or dermal fillers?

Many patients often think that anti-wrinkle injections are the same as dermal fillers, or that one treatment is better than the other. But this is not the case.

Botox treatment and dermal fillers are both effective anti-ageing treatments, but each targets different skin issues and provides different results.

Why choose Anti-wrinkle treatments?

Anti-wrinkle injections work best on fine lines that appear on the face when you use your facial muscles. These are also known as dynamic wrinkles. The most common areas for anti-wrinkle injections include crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead lines, lip lines and bunny lines.

Why choose dermal filler treatments?

Dermal fillers focus more on adding volume or restoring lost volume in areas of the face such as the cheeks, under eyes, chin and jawline. They help to add contour and shape to the face so that your facial features are more balanced.

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid which helps to plump and hydrate the skin from within. This helps with reducing deep-set wrinkles that remain on the face even when it is still. These are also known as static wrinkles.

Can I have dermal fillers and Botox injections together?

The short answer is yes, but this will depend on your individual needs and what areas will benefit from each of the treatments.

If you are having both treatments in the same area, you will need to wait at least 1-2 weeks between treatments. Usually, we start with anti-wrinkle treatment first to reduce any fine lines. Then we use dermal fillers to add volume and shape to the face, while also targeting any deep wrinkles.

What happens during anti-wrinkle treatment in Bourne End?

During your anti-wrinkle treatment, your doctor or practitioner will talk you through where the injection sites will be and how much Botulinum toxin they will use.

The procedure uses a very fine needle, which is only slightly uncomfortable. You will likely feel a small sharp scratch from the needle, but this lasts only a second or two. If you would prefer, we can discuss using a numbing cream first.

The treatment itself is fairly straightforward and will take no more than 30 minutes to complete. This will depend on how many areas of Botox you are having in one session.

The good news is that you can go back to work right after your treatment. You will need to avoid strenuous exercise for 24-28 hours, not lie down for the first few hours and avoid sun exposure or excessive heat for the first 48 hours.

Botox aftercare and results

After your treatment, the injection sites might feel tender and look slightly red or swollen for a few hours. This is completely normal and will go down. You may also experience some mild bruising, but this should subside in a day or two.

Your doctor will give you further information and advice on how to look after your skin to allow the Botox to settle and your results to show.

It can take 1-2 weeks for the Botox to settle and for your fine lines and wrinkles to fade. Your results should last for 3-4 months. For some, this can be longer. We do recommend that you book in for a top-up treatment at the 3-4 month mark, so that you can maintain your great results.

Are Botox treatments safe?

Anti-wrinkle treatments are a safe and effective way to target and reduce your fine lines. However, you need to have your treatment with highly-skilled professionals who understand facial anatomy and where to inject to get natural-looking results.
